Practical ways to notice changing light, shape, and relief.

Earthshine is sunlight reflected from Earth onto the Moon; look for it around a slim crescent in clear twilight.

Sketch the illuminated shape and a few features on repeated nights, noting time, orientation and conditions instead of expecting identical views.

Binoculars make the Moon easier to inspect, especially its broad dark plains and major light-dark boundaries, although fine detail needs steadier optics.

Use the bright full disk to compare large dark maria and pale highlands; save shadow-rich crater hunting for other phases.

The terminator produces long shadows that emphasize terrain, while a full Moon is flatter in direct sunlight.
